“They Slept Under a Tree…”

They slept under a tree near the overpass, side by side on top of August’s plastic sheet. Kirsten slept fitfully, aware each time she woke of the emptiness of the landscape, the lack of people and animals and caravans around her. Hell is the absence of the people you long for (144).

–Emily St. John Mandel, Station Eleven

During my summer residency, numerous folks recommended this book. I’m about halfway through and enjoying the hell out of it. Regardless of what you normally pick up online or at the bookstore, be sure to add this to your collection. Post-apocalyptic , Literary fiction (if you’re into labels) at its finest.

Shout out to Magers & Quinn Booksellers in Minneapolis for this one.
