Evening, folks. Been some time since posting a basement missive, but I hope you’ll let it slide. Life became rather busy what with: the addition of another Purdy (Huzzah, George) back in May, selling our old home, buying a new home, beginning another school year, and moving.
But fall is officially here, and everything seems to be settling as much as it can for now (still in the process of unpacking boxes and putting up towel bars, but we’re getting there). I thought I’d take some time to ramp my writing endeavors back up, which brings me to the subject of today’s post.
This October some of my friends and I are going to be participating in a short fiction marathon of sorts. We’re adapting this from a challenge visual artists have dubbed Inktober, in which they draw a new piece of art for each of October’s thirty-one days. There’s even an official web page with rules and daily prompts. The rules are simple:
- Make a drawing in ink.
- Post it
- Hashtag it with #inktober and #inktober2019
The whole point of the challenge is to get folks to create art and share it with the world.
We’re taking the same rules, but applying them to short fiction:
- Tackle the day’s prompt in a range of 250-1,000 words
- Post it
- Hashtag it with #ShortAsFictober and #ShortAsFictober2019
I’m using the challenge to shake the rust off writing muscles, learn how to write faster with less editing and self-censorship along the way, and finally to figure out how to tell succinct stories that posses both heart and high readability. I’m also looking to get to know more folks in the writing community through the sharing of stories..
Writing is a strange and giant beast, that I sometimes lose sight of the simple fact that it’s supposed to be fun. I’m looking forward to what kinds of stories will happen over the next 31 days. Who’s with me?
Look for a new story on this page every day.
Have a grand evening. Be well. Huzzah!
